On this day in 1853…

Cecil John Rhodes was born in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. The son of a Vicar, Rhodes was sent to South Africa as a 17 year old, in the belief that it would be beneficial for his health.

Though today’s woke fanatics frantically try to tarnish his reputation, there is no doubt that, for better or worse, Rhodes was one of the men who built South Africa.

He died in 1902, aged just 48.
