The Telegraph reports that Putin, addressing a much-reduced military parade (I wonder where all the missing tanks are?) today, claimed that Russia had no choice but to invade the Ukraine, because the West was “preparing for the invasion of our land, including Crimea… NATO is actively pursuing our territory. That is absolutely unacceptable to us. We are talking about neo-Nazi’s in Ukraine that the US and its partners are working with“.
Of course, the old ‘we had no choice – it was a pre-emptive strike’ is a favourite excuse, and one regularly spewed-out by unsavoury tin-pot dictators, in a frantic (pathetic?) attempt to justify their attacks.
123 years on from Kruger’s invasions of British territory, his blinkered apologists continue to make similar claims, excusing Kruger’s blatant aggression by pretending that the wicked, scheming British were just about to invade the Transvaal. Needless to say, this is about as accurate as the notion that the Ukraine was about to invade Russia.
One wonders if Putin’s lies will similarly inspire a new generation of True Believers, and if such fools will take to social media in 2145, attempting to explain why Putin was – despite all evidence to the contrary – the poor, innocent, misunderstood victim in all this.
